In the 1990s, domestic Imaging Spectroscopy was gradually developed under the active advocacy of Qingxi Tong, an Academician of CAS, who is also the pioneer of Chinese aviation remote sensing. Meanwhile, hyperspectral imaging mechanism, image cube data processing and its applications in many fields have also been continuously expanded and improved. The Hyperspectral Remote Sensing (HRS) laboratory which belonged to the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Chinese Academy of Sciences, is one of the earliest organizations engaged in hyperspectral remote sensing research in china. Our laboratory put forward and developed a series of hyperspectral remote sensing information processing models and analysis methods. Besides, we developed some professional remote sensing data processing software and carried out the basic research of hyperspectral remote sensing applications and the corresponding experiments.

The Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis System (HIPAS)  was independently developed by HRS laboratory and is the first professional hyperspectral remote sensing data processing and application software with independent intellectual copyright, it won an award of excellence from the national ministry of science and technology in the domestic remote sensing software’s competition in 2003. There are two books written by the lab which have been published, one is ”Hyperspectral Remote Sensing” (higher education press), and the other is ”Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Multidisciplinary Applications” (publishing house of electronics industry).

In addition to the research on hyperspectral remote sensing, our lab is also explores the high spatial resolution remote sensing and optical remote sensor system development, calibration and the application of remote sensing. By getting access to a large number of high quality aerial images and then to made a special figure, MADC camera system which we made have provided quick and accurate basis for timely decision in Wenchuan, Sichuan province earthquake and the enteromorpha monitoring of the Olympic sailing venue of Qingdao.

HRS laboratoryhas 19 Research Specialist Staff, among which there are 2 academicians of CAS, 6 research fellows and 4 associate research-fellows. Ph.D and Master candidates are about 30.HRS laboratory is dedicated towards the development of hyperspectral remote sensing technology and applications. HRS laboratory has undertaken many important projects, including National863 project, National Science and Technology Supporting Plan, National Natural fund, Chinese academy of sciences Innovation project, Beijing Science and Technology Innovation project, High Scores Major projects and many other scientific research projects. The average annual scientific research funds of lab is 5 million for the recent five years. HRS laboratory has won 2 provincial awards for publishing more than 170 articles, including 28 SCI papers and 72 EI papers, and also for publishing 3 books and 9 software registration rights.
